How to Upload a World to Your Minecraft Server

Upload your Minecraft world to your server from the panel, whether it is a singleplayer save, a world from another host or a download, and make it active.

To upload a world to your Minecraft server, zip the world folder (the one that contains level.dat), open the World tab in the panel and click Upload a world. The panel unpacks the archive, finds the world inside it and, if you ask, makes it the active world on the next restart.

This guide is for Minecraft Java servers.

Prepare the world on your computer

  1. Close Minecraft so the world is saved.
  2. Find the world folder. For a singleplayer world it is inside your saves folder:
plaintext
%appdata%\.minecraft\saves\My World
plaintext
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves/My World
plaintext
~/.minecraft/saves/My World
  1. Check that the folder contains a file called level.dat. That is what makes it a world.
  2. Compress the folder into a .zip file. The panel also accepts .tar.gz, .tar, .rar and .7z.

If the world comes from another host, download it as an archive and use that file, or copy its direct download link.

Upload it with the world uploader

  1. Sign in to the SolumeCore panel and open your server.
  2. Go to the World tab. The Worlds & map section lists your worlds and has the Upload a world button.
  3. In the File step, choose From my computer and drop your archive, or click to pick it. To use a link instead, choose From a link and paste the Direct download link.
  4. In the Name step, type the World folder name. Use letters, numbers, spaces, dashes or dots, without slashes.
  5. Decide whether to tick Make it the active world (needs a restart). If you leave it off, the world is saved in the list to use later.
  6. Click Import. The panel shows Uploading, then Extracting and placing the world....

The panel looks for level.dat at the top of the archive or one or two folders down, so it still works if the world is wrapped in an extra folder. If it cannot find one, you get an error saying the archive has no world inside.

i
Note

Pick a name that is not in use. If a folder with that name already exists, the panel stops and asks you to choose another one, so it never overwrites an existing world. Your default world is usually called world, so name the new one something like survival2.

Make it the active world

Only one world loads when the server starts: the one set in level-name in server.properties. You have two ways to choose it:

  • Tick Make it the active world during the upload.
  • Or later, open the world list in World > Worlds & map and click Use this one on the world you want.

Then restart the server. If the server was running when you uploaded, the panel reminds you that the new world loads when you restart it.

Check the result

  1. After the restart, join the server and check your buildings and your inventory.
  2. If the world needs a different game mode or difficulty, change it in server.properties.
  3. Back up the world once it works. In the world list, Back up only this world (when your plan offers it) creates a backup of just that world. Read how backups work.

Replace your current world

Do not overwrite the old world folder by hand while the server runs, because Minecraft writes the old world back when it shuts down. The safe way:

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Back up the current world with Back up only this world if you may want it back.
  3. Upload the new world with a new name and make it active.
  4. Start the server. When you are sure you no longer need the old one, delete its folder in Files.

To start over with a fresh world instead, use Reset or regenerate in the world list.

Troubleshooting

  • "The archive has no world inside." The panel found no level.dat. Open the ZIP on your computer and check that it is really there, no more than two folders deep.
  • A folder with that name already exists. Choose another name in the Name step.
  • The server could not download that link. Make sure it is a direct download, not a web page with a button.
  • The upload is huge. Use SFTP to upload the archive, then extract it, or upload the unpacked folder.
  • The world loads but the Nether or the End are empty. Some server types, such as Paper and Spigot, can keep the Nether and the End in their own folders next to the world, named world_nether and world_the_end. A singleplayer save keeps them inside the world, in the DIM-1 (Nether) and DIM1 (End) folders. If you land in a brand-new Nether or End, move those folders into the matching ones in Files, or open a ticket and we will help.
  • The server will not start after the change. Check that level-name matches the folder name exactly, including capitals. See what to do when a Minecraft server will not start.

FAQ

How do I upload a singleplayer world to a server?

Zip the world folder from your saves folder and upload it with World > Upload a world. Tick Make it the active world and restart the server.

Can I upload a world from another hosting company?

Yes. Download the world as an archive from your old host, or copy a direct link to it, and use the uploader. You can paste the link in the From a link option.

What happens to my old world?

Nothing, if you give the new one a different name. The old world stays in the list and you can switch back with Use this one.

Which file types can I upload?

.zip, .tar.gz, .tar, .rar and .7z. A ZIP is the most reliable choice.
