How to Change the Main Domain of Your Web Hosting
Change the main domain of your hosting from the dashboard: requirements, what happens to email, WordPress and SSL, and how long to wait between changes.
To change the main domain of your web hosting, open the hosting in the dashboard, go to Domain & DNS, then Domains & subdomains, and click Change main domain. The new domain must already point to your hosting, because that is how SolumeCore knows it is yours. Mailboxes move to the new domain, the SSL certificate is issued automatically, and you need to wait between one change and the next.
Before you start
- The new domain must already point to this hosting, either with our nameservers or with the
Arecord, as explained in Point a domain to your web hosting. The dashboard checks it with public DNS servers. - The new domain cannot be the main domain of another SolumeCore hosting, and it cannot be a SolumeCore temporary address. Use the domain you registered.
- You can type it with or without
www. The dashboard removes thewww. - There is a waiting time between changes. By default you can change the main domain again 24 hours after the last change, so double-check the domain before you confirm.
- If your hosting is still on its temporary address, this is not the guide you need: use Connect my domain, which is a one-time step that does not require the DNS to point first. See Point a domain to your web hosting.
Change the main domain
- Sign in to the SolumeCore dashboard, open Web hosting and choose your hosting.
- Go to Domain & DNS and select Domains & subdomains.
- In the Main domain card, click Change main domain. The card shows the current address and its aliases, which are other names for the same site.
- In New domain, type the domain, for example
mynewshop.com, and continue. A note reminds you that the new domain must already point to this hosting. - In What changes, read the notes. They explain what will happen (see below).
- In Confirm, check I understand my site will answer on the new domain. The screen shows From the old domain To the new one. Click Change domain.
A message confirms that your hosting now answers on the new domain.
What changes when you switch
- Email. The mailboxes of the old domain move to the new one, so the addresses change to your new domain. Tell your contacts and update the address in your email apps.
- WordPress or other apps. Update their address to the new domain. In WordPress, go to Settings, then General, and change WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL), which are the
siteurlandhomevalues. - SSL certificate. The certificate for the new domain is issued automatically within minutes.
- The old domain. It stops being the main domain of the hosting. If you still need it to open a site, connect it again from Domains & subdomains once the change is done.
Check the new domain before confirming. Because of the waiting time between changes, a mistake cannot be undone straight away.
Troubleshooting
The dashboard says the domain does not point to this hosting yet
The domain is not using our nameservers or the right A record, or the change has not propagated. Set the DNS, wait and check with How to check DNS propagation, then try again.
The dashboard says you changed the domain recently
You have to wait the time that applies since the last change. The message tells you how many hours. Open a ticket if you have an urgent problem.
The dashboard says the domain is already in use on another hosting
It is the main domain of another SolumeCore hosting. Free it there first, or use another domain.
The site shows an error after the change
Your DNS may not have propagated yet, or WordPress still uses the old address. Check the DNS health in Connection and update the WordPress addresses.
FAQ
Can I change my hosting domain whenever I want?
Not constantly. There is a minimum wait between changes, 24 hours by default.
Will I lose my files and databases?
The files stay in the same hosting account. Mailboxes move to the new domain, as described above. Make a backup before making important changes, as shown in Back up and restore your web hosting.
Do I need to change the nameservers too?
Only if the new domain does not point to the hosting yet. It must point to it before you can make the change.
How do I add another site instead of replacing the main one?
Add it as an addon domain or a subdomain. See Add a subdomain or addon domain to your hosting.
