SFTP Connection Reference for Game Servers
Connect to your SolumeCore game server over SFTP: host, port, username format, password or SSH key login, FileZilla, WinSCP and sftp examples, and fixes.
SFTP lets you copy files between your computer and your game server with a program such as FileZilla or WinSCP, as if the server were a folder. It is the right tool for big worlds, modpacks and bulk edits that are awkward in a browser. This page lists exactly what the panel shows you (host, port, username), the ways to sign in (password or SSH key), client setup, what a guest needs, and fixes for common errors.
You never have to build the connection details by hand. Open your server in the client panel at dashboard.solumecore.com and press Connect, or go to Files and press Connect with FileZilla (SFTP). Both show the host, port and username with a copy button, and a button that opens your SFTP program with everything filled in. The Files version is the full panel, titled Connect with SFTP, where you also manage your own SFTP password and your SSH keys.
Connection details
| Field in the panel | Value |
|---|---|
| Server (or Host) | The address of the machine that hosts your server. Copy it from the panel. |
| Port | Shown in the panel. The platform default is 2022, not the usual SSH port 22. |
| Username (or User) | <your account username>.<first 8 characters of the server id>, for example alex.1a2b3c4d. |
| Password | Your account password or your own SFTP password, depending on your account (see below). |
| Protocol | SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol). Game servers are reached over SFTP, not plain FTP. |
The suffix after the dot tells the system which of your servers you mean, so every server has a different username. Your account username is part of it, so if you change your username in your account, the SFTP username changes too.
The panel also builds a full address of the form sftp://user@host:port. The Open in FileZilla / WinSCP button uses it, and you can paste it into most clients.
Sign in with a password
There are two kinds of password, and which one works depends on your account:
| Your account | What opens SFTP |
|---|---|
| Has a password and no two-step verification | Your account password, or an SFTP password. |
| Has two-step verification (authenticator app, or a passkey as second factor) | An SFTP password or an SSH key only. Your account password is refused for SFTP, so nobody gets in with a single factor through this door. |
| Signed up with Google or Discord and has no password | An SFTP password (create one), or an SSH key. |
Important: if SFTP stops accepting your password right after you turn on two-step verification, this is why. Create an SFTP password or add an SSH key instead. Some on-screen hints still say "your account password"; with two-step verification on, that does not apply.
Create an SFTP password
In the Connect panel press Create an SFTP password. In the full Connect with SFTP panel (Files → Connect with FileZilla (SFTP)) you can also press Choose it myself to type one. The panel generates a random one and shows it once: copy it right then and save it in your SFTP program. A password you choose yourself must have at least 10 characters.
- There is one SFTP password per account, and it works for every server you can use SFTP on.
- Creating or changing it asks you to confirm it is you (password, code or passkey), and it cannot be done from a support session.
- Changing it (Change SFTP password or New SFTP password) invalidates the old one in every program that saved it. Remove SFTP password deletes it; your account password, if you have one and no 2FA, keeps working.
Sign in with an SSH key
A key lets your computer connect without typing a password, and it is the safest option if you connect often. Keys are registered per server.
- On your computer create a key if you do not have one:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519. This makes a private file and a.pubpublic file. - In Files → Connect with FileZilla (SFTP), scroll to SSH keys and press Add key.
- Give it a name, such as "My laptop", and paste the contents of the public key (
~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub). Never paste the private key. - Save. Adding a key also asks you to confirm it is you.
The panel accepts Ed25519, RSA (of a minimum length), ECDSA and security-key (sk-) public keys. You can keep up to 10 keys per server, each shows when it was last used, and Remove deletes one. Keys you add for a server work only on that server.
Client setup
FileZilla
- Open File → Site Manager and create a new site.
- Protocol: SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol.
- Host, Port, User and Password from the panel. For a key, set Logon type to Key file and pick your private key.
- Press Connect. The first time, FileZilla asks you to trust the server's fingerprint.
WinSCP
- File protocol SFTP, and enter Host name, Port number, User name and Password.
- For a key, open Advanced → SSH → Authentication and select your private key file; WinSCP offers to convert it if needed.
- Press Login.
Command line
sftp -P 2022 [email protected]sftp -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 -P 2022 [email protected]Note the capital -P for the port. Replace host, port and username with the values from your panel; the ones above are placeholders. Inside the session:
sftp> ls
sftp> put world.zip
sftp> get server.properties
sftp> exitWhat a guest can do over SFTP
People you invited can use SFTP only if you gave them Connect over SFTP (file.sftp). Having access to the panel is not enough, because SFTP skips the panel's checks. What they can do once connected follows from five file permissions:
| Permission | What it lets them do over SFTP |
|---|---|
file.read |
List folders. |
file.read-content |
Open and download files. |
file.create |
Create new files and folders. |
file.update |
Overwrite, rename and move files. |
file.delete |
Delete. |
Without file.read-content, a guest connects, sees names and cannot download anything. The owner has all five. See Game server permissions for the full list. Removing a guest deletes their keys and cuts their open sessions.
SFTP activity (files written, created, deleted and renamed) is recorded in Settings → History.
When SFTP is blocked
The connection is refused while:
- the service is suspended, paused or cancelled, or the server itself is suspended;
- a backup is being restored on that server;
- the account is not active;
- there have been too many failed password attempts. Wait a while and try with the right password.
For safety, changing or resetting your account password, or closing all your sessions, deletes your SFTP password and your SSH keys. Create them again afterwards.
Common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Authentication failed with a correct password | You enabled two-step verification: use an SFTP password or an SSH key. Or the saved password in your client is the old one. |
| Authentication failed, new account or server | The username is missing the .xxxxxxxx suffix, or you changed your account username. Copy the username again. |
| Connection timed out or refused | Wrong port (it is probably not 22) or your network blocks it. Use the port from the panel. |
| You can list folders but cannot download | A guest without file.read-content. Ask the owner. |
| Permission denied when uploading | A guest without file.create or file.update. |
| It worked yesterday and now fails | Password or keys were revoked after an account password change, the service is suspended, or a backup restore is running. |
| Upload of a huge file fails in the browser | Use SFTP: the in-panel uploader caps file size. |
Other products
Apps and bots hosted in the same panel have the same SFTP details under Connect. Web hosting is different: it uses FTP on port 21 with your cPanel user and password, shown on the hosting service page. A VPS or VDS has no SFTP panel; you connect with SSH (ssh root@<ip>) or, on Windows, Remote Desktop. See Web hosting with cPanel and VPS vs VDS.
FAQ
What is the SFTP port for my game server?
The panel shows it in the Port field. The platform default is 2022. Do not assume 22.
What is my SFTP username?
Your account username, a dot, and the first 8 characters of the server id, such as alex.1a2b3c4d. Copy it from the panel instead of building it.
Can I use SFTP with two-step verification on?
Yes, but with an SFTP password or an SSH key, not with your account password. Read Account security for how 2FA works.
Is SFTP different from FTP?
Yes. SFTP runs over an encrypted SSH connection; FTP does not. Game servers use SFTP only.
Can I give a friend SFTP access to just one server?
Yes. Invite them with Connect over SFTP and the file permissions they need. Their password and keys are their own.
