A faithful approximation of the real list (pixel font, multiplayer-panel-style background) — Mojang doesn't allow redistributing their exact font, so it's not 100% pixel-perfect.

What is the MOTD and where do I paste it?

The MOTD ("message of the day") is the text players see next to your server's name and icon in the Minecraft multiplayer list, before connecting. It's set in the motd= line of server.properties, in your server's root folder. Minecraft supports "legacy" formatting codes using the section symbol (§) followed by a character: codes 0–9 and a–f change the color, and k, l, m, n, o, r control obfuscated, bold, strikethrough, underline, italic and reset respectively.

How color and format codes behave

One detail that trips a lot of people up: applying a color code automatically resets any bold/italic/underline/strikethrough that was active — only §r resets everything, including color, back to white. Format codes (bold, italic, etc.), on the other hand, do stack with each other. This tool's preview replicates that exact behavior so what you see here is what you'll see in-game.

Practical limit: ~59 characters and two lines

The vanilla client's server list supports up to two MOTD lines and truncates visible text past roughly 59-60 characters per line (the real width depends on each character's pixel width, it's not an exact character limit). The § codes aren't shown, but they do take up space in the file — with heavily color-coded MOTDs, leave extra margin so you don't risk an ugly cutoff. That's why we show a counter under each line.

FAQ

Does this work on Bedrock servers too?+

Partially. Bedrock supports a more limited subset of these formatting codes and rendering varies by platform (console, mobile, Windows). Test your MOTD on an actual Bedrock client before assuming it will look the same as on Java.

Why don't I see the colors in the server list?+

The most common causes: an outdated client or a resource pack overriding the font, or a MOTD-manager plugin that generates the MOTD dynamically and overwrites what you set in server.properties on every server ping. Check whether you have one of those plugins active.

Can I put emojis in the MOTD?+

Technically yes, if you save server.properties as UTF-8, but Minecraft's default font doesn't render most emojis (they show as a box or simply don't appear) and results vary a lot between clients. For something reliable, stick to ASCII text and this tool's § codes.

Does this also apply to what other server-status websites show?+

Yes — most status trackers (and things like /list on other servers) read the same MOTD your server returns when pinged, so the text you generate here will look the same in those places too.
